Wexsus, an institutional support member of SweDev, and Chalmers University of Technology have received a planning grant from Vinnova to develop a proposal for a Horizon Europe, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) – Doctoral Network. The initiative, led by Associate Professor Magdalena Eriksson (SweDev steering committee member) and Professor Erik Ahlgren from Chalmers, aims to establish an international doctoral network in sustainable development and support early-stage researchers.

The network will involve partners from the strategic alliance IDEA League – Chalmers University of Technology, ETH Zurich, Delft University of Technology, RWTH Aachen University, and Politecnico di Milano – as well as University West, Wexsus, and African universities. Around ten doctoral projects are envisioned, each co-supervised by European and African researchers, focusing on interdisciplinary methods for the green transition, particularly in energy and urban development. The objective is to create interconnected projects combining academic excellence and societal relevance.

The training programme will include a tailored course package on sustainability, transferable skills, and gender perspectives, delivered through physical meetings and webinars. In collaboration with University West, the program will offer work-integrated learning, including collaborative placements in industry, civil society, and public organisations.
