Providing humanitarian assistance amid repression and conflict – the case of Myanmar

On 27 May 2025, the Asia Programme at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) will be hosting a roundtable discussion on “Providing humanitarian assistance amid repression and conflict – the case of Myanmar”.
Aid actors often face challenging operational conditions during humanitarian crises, even more so when they must navigate a repressive environment and civil war. In this roundtable, Paul Vrieze, Associate Research Fellow at UI’s Asia Programme, will present his research findings on the severe crisis in Myanmar, where international and local aid actors struggle to help millions of people suffering from army rule, civil war and a recent earthquake.
Margareta Wahlström formerly Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction with extensive experience aid delivery and emergency relief will give some reflections on the challenges. Åsa Malmström Rognes Head of the Asia Programme will moderate the discussion.
