Narratives of Extraction: Perspectives on art, culture, and environmental justice in the Global South
Date: June 11, 2024
Join the Culture & Communication and Global South clusters of EcoJust, and Färgfabriken for a one-day workshop about the role of art and culture in (re-)forming imaginaries and mobilizing social movements that criticize and problematize the effects of mining and other extractivist practices from a Global South perspective on 11 June, 9.30-15.30 CEST.
“Extractivism is a global system, although its direct effects are generally felt in the southern and/or remote parts of the world, revealing legacies of colonialism and global asymmetries in production and consumption. The industrial past, the digital present, and “green” futures all rely on the extraction of minerals in resource-rich territories, often ancestral lands of indigenous populations, threatened by global economic interests.
In this workshop, we want to critically engage with various aspects of extractivism as a planetary system, and examine the boundaries, possibilities, and impacts of these intersections through the voices and practices in those regions and by those populations most affected by it.”
