The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is organising the next World Water Week on 24-28 August 2025. World Water Week is the leading conference on global water issues, held every year since 1991, and the theme for this year’s conference is Water for Climate Action.

About the conference

Water plays a pivotal role in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to build resilience safeguarding ecosystems and communities. World Water Week 2025 will focus on addressing the linked emergencies of climate change, environment degradation and biodiversity loss, emphasizing both mitigation and adaptation, alongside the broader goal of enhancing resilience.

The Week will cover every aspect of water: freshwater from source to sea; blue water; green water; salt water in seas and oceans. This broad scope links to the UN’s 2025 Theme of glaciers and the cryosphere and also overtly recognizes oceans as vital parts of the hydrological cycle linking water and climate.

To understand holistically the planet’s ability to sustain life, SIWI is keen to incorporate the concept of planetary boundaries into World Water Week’s intellectual framework for studying water and climate. Freshwater Change is one of the nine planetary boundaries and water is involved, to a greater or lesser extent, in the other eight boundaries. Humanity’s impacts on all the planet’s systems are connected to each other and therefore a debate about water is also a debate about the other systems and boundaries. In addition, humanity is not currently an equitable actor in climate change; the only morally viable plan for the future of water and climate is one that addresses justice and equity among all humans.

In terms of participants, the Week will be of interest to climate policy makers and practitioners, to water professionals, and to all people who recognize water-related mitigation and resilience as part of their work to reduce global heating and stabilize the climate.
