LUCSUS seminars – Spring 2022 “Connecting the Local and the Global”

A new series of LUCSUS Seminars at Lund University

Issues ranging from climate change and pandemics to finance and digitalization often evoke notions of ‘the global’. Yet, though global, these processes are always grounded in the local; emerging from, having impact on, and transformed by concrete local contexts and experiences. Connecting the global with the local is central to LUCSUS research and teaching. With this seminar series, we zoom in on the situated experiences, follow the connections, and tease out the relations that link local with the global.

The seminar series covers topics ranging from climate justice, activism, and decolonization, to governance, health, and digitalization. The LUCSUS seminars are open for the public, held online and take place Thursdays from 11 am to 12 noon.

Second Seminar – “Environmental Policy Instruments across Commodity Chains: Comparing multi-level governance for Biodiversity Protection and Climate Action in Brazil, Colombia, and Indonesia”

In this presentation, the LUCSUS researchers will introduce the EPICC research project where we apply multi-level governance and environmental justice approach to selected commodity chains (cattle, palm oil, gold and tin). By mapping the governance and power links that connect these multiple territories and legal systems with the European market, EPICC seeks to identify and analyse leverage points, blind spots and shed light on the micro and macro conditions that may facilitate the mitigation of environmental and social impacts that occur at the selected locations of production (in Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia).

Speakers

Torsten Krause is a Senior lecturer at the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS), Sweden. He works on topics around forest governance, conservation and sustainable development in Ecuador, Colombia, Nigeria and South Africa, and is currently working on three projects: MaCoBioS – Marine Coastal Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Services in a Changing World, EPICC, and Nature of Peace.

Barbara Schröter is a researcher at the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS), Sweden, and the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) in Müncheberg, Germany. She is a political scientist with a regional focus on Latin America. Her research focus is on governance, institutional and social network analysis using participatory methods, transdisciplinary and transformative approaches. She is currently working on nature-based solutions, water governance and sustainable global value chains.
