The annual assembly of SweDev, held in Lund during the DevRes conference, successfully engaged members in discussions about the future of the network. The assembly took place on 22 October 2024, and was led by Jesper Sundewall, Chairperson, alongside Emma Elfversson, SweDev Director.

During the assembly, Jesper and Emma addressed the current landscape of development research in Sweden, particularly in light of recent funding cuts. They emphasized the fundamental purpose of the network and articulated SweDev’s aspiration to act as a mobilizing force in advocating for development research and engaging with policymakers. Looking ahead, SweDev aims to continue being a recognized dialogue partner for decision-makers, enhancing its advocacy efforts while also producing op-eds and reports to raise awareness.

The assembly underscored the intrinsic value of each network member, encouraging attendees to connect with the Secretariat or the Executive Committee to share information and foster ongoing dialogue, reinforcing SweDev’s status as a member-driven network.

The open discussion yielded fruitful conversations among SweDev members, particularly regarding the network’s potential role in supporting future development research conferences. Additionally, there was enthusiasm about expanding connections with broader international development networks. Members emphasized the importance of development research and the necessity of enhancing public and political understanding of its significance. The conversation highlighted the overlap between development research and other research areas, focusing on reframing problems and shifting mindsets.
