In the Aftermath of a National Tragedy: Excavating Memories of Cyclone Freddy in Malawi
Date: November 19, 2024
On 19 November 2024 from 15.15-17.00, the The Nordic Africa Institute together with the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University will host a lecture entitled ‘’ In the Aftermath of a National Tragedy: Excavating Memories of Cyclone Freddy in Malawi’’.
In 2023, Cyclone Freddy struck Southern Africa with devastating force, especially impacting Malawi. Landslides and mudslides displaced hundreds of thousands, claimed over 1,000 lives, and left lasting scars on the affected communities. In this lecture by Professor Nick Mdika Tembo, he will explore the systemic vulnerabilities exposed by this disaster, as well as the critical roles of various actors in disaster risk reduction and recovery.
Professor Tembo, a renowned expert in trauma and memory studies from the University of Malawi, will guide attendees through the lasting emotional and physical impacts of Cyclone Freddy. Examining trauma as a bridge between past and present, he will discuss how disasters shape communities.
The event will be held both in person and online via zoom.
The deadline to register for the in-person event is 7 November 2024.
