Between Hope and Disillusion – How Young People in Africa and Europe Shape Politics in a Crisis-Ridden World

The European Association of Development Research and Training Institute (EADI) together with the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) are hosting a lecture on 29 October 2024 on the political attitudes and participation of young people in Africa and Europe.
Young people across continents share concerns about their country’s economic challenges, particularly unemployment and inequality, along with issues like climate change, violent conflicts, and the lasting impact of COVID-19. This growing sense of frustration, however, has not led to increased political engagement, with low voter turnout and a rise in dissatisfaction with democratic systems. Many young people instead express their political views through protests, civic organizations, or social movements, such as climate activism.
This year’s Megatrends lecture, co-hosted by CASSIS/University of Bonn, EADI, and Megatrends Afrika (IDOS), will explore youth political attitudes in Africa and Europe. It will examine how young people engage amid current challenges, the political response to their concerns—especially in Africa, where they are the largest voting group—and whether we are seeing new, sustainable forms of political engagement or an era of disillusionment.
